EPA27 Delays Cummins’ New Engines, But Your Medium-Duty Truck Isn’t Affected

EPA27 Delays Cummins’ New Engines, But Your Medium-Duty Truck Isn’t Affected

If you’ve been reading the trucking press lately, you’ve probably seen the headlines: Cummins is slowing down the rollout of its next-generation X10 and X15 engines because of proposed changes to the EPA’s 2027 emissions rule. The company confirmed it in late July, and CEO Jennifer Rumsey put it plainly: “Our long-term product strategy has not changed. This is about improving the transition, not changing the destination.”

That’s a big deal if you’re spec’ing Class 8 sleepers and daycabs. It’s not a big deal if you’re running the medium-duty trucks we sell.

What has changed

The X10 and X15 are Cummins’ new fuel-agnostic HELM engines, a 10-liter and a 15-liter, built for heavy-duty highway trucks. The EPA proposed easing some of the implementation timeline on its 2027 low-NOx rule, and Cummins responded by staggering production instead of launching both engines at full volume in January 2027. Limited production starts then; full production ramps through the back half of the year. Cummins says the current X15, X12, and L9 will keep shipping in the meantime so nobody’s left without an engine.

None of that involves the B6.7L.

Where your medium-duty truck fits in

Every medium-duty Hino we sell runs on the B6.7L, and Cummins confirmed it’s staying in production through 2027, untouched by any of this. The next generation, the 7.2L, is still targeted for a January 2028 launch, same date it’s been on for a while. The X10/X15 delay is a heavy-duty story. The B platform timeline hasn’t moved.

That matters if you’ve been sitting on a purchase decision because you weren’t sure what EPA27 was going to do to the market. For medium-duty buyers, the answer right now is: not much. You’re not buying into an engine platform that’s about to get pulled or redesigned mid-cycle. You’re not waiting on a 2028 truck that might slip. The B6.7L you’d spec today is the same one Cummins expects fleets to be running for at least another two years.

The big picture

EPA27 is going to reshape a lot of buying decisions across the industry, especially for fleets choosing between 9-liter and 12-liter platforms in the Class 8 world. That’s worth watching. But it’s a heavy-duty story, and the noise around it shouldn’t be driving hesitation on a medium-duty purchase where the engine platform isn’t part of the disruption.
